Master Chief Andrew M. Smith, a native of Pineview, Georgia, enlisted in the United States Navy in July 17, 1992. Following completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command and the Basic Seamanship Apprentice course in Orlando, Florida, he reported to his first duty station, USS Thomas C. Hart (FF 1092) in Norfolk, Virginia.

After serving only one year on FF-1092, and earning his Enlisted Surface Warfare designation, the ship was transferred to the Turkish Navy and he received orders to the USS Shenandoah (AD 44).  After serving another one-year tour, he cross-rated to torpedoman and reported back to Orlando, Florida, for Torpedoman A-School and MK48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) Torpedo C-School. Upon graduation, he reported to Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility onboard Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as fuel room supervisor and was promoted to 2nd class petty officer.

His other assignments include USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), San Diego, California; Corry Station, Pensacola, Florida (CTR A-School), Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Pensacola, Florida; USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), San Diego, California; USS Chancerlorsville (CG 62), San Diego, California, and Commander, U.S. 3rdFleet, San Diego, California.

Master Chief Smith is currently serving as the senior enlisted leader of Cryptologic Warfare Maritime Activity (CWMA) 61.

He is currently enrolled in American Military University pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management.

His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (7 awards), Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Unit Commendation (Operational Distinguishing Device), Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (3 awards), Battle Efficiency Ribbon (wreath), Good Conduct Medal (8 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5 awards), and Navy Pistol and Rifle Expert Medals.
