Capt. Brad Kinkead enlisted in the Navy’s Nuclear Field Program following high school and was accepted to the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science.  He earned his first Master’s degree in information technology management in 2008.  

Fleet assignments include ordnance officer, strike, combat systems officer, and first lieutenant in USS Spruance (DD 963); navigator and administrative officer in USS Philippine Sea (CG 58); C4I officer in Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22; chief of staff for CTF-152 U.S. Naval Forces Central Command headquarters in Bahrain; deputy C5I Officer in Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3; and C5I assistance chief of staff in CSG-4.  He served with distinction in support of Operations Uphold Democracy, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.
Shore assignments include professional development division, U.S. Naval Academy; Office of Naval Research reserve headquarters; Naval District Washington headquarters; executive officer of the USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) headquarters reserve detachment; Navy Personnel Command, Millington, Tennessee; information systems officer at Trident Refit Facility, Kings Bay; and executive officer at Naval Network Warfare Command and Task Force 1010 in Suffolk, Virginia.  

As a civilian, he worked within the Cyber Crimes division at the Navy Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) headquarters at the Washington Navy Yard; and at US internetworking Inc., one of the nation’s first application service providers.
Capt. Kinkead comes to NCTAMS LANT from the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS), Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia. JAWS strives to prepare planners and strategic thinkers who are able to use history effectively to frame complex problems, evaluate the operational design of a campaign, and create effective operational plans.

He is a 2014 graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, earning a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies; and a 2019 graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, earning a Masters of Science Degree in joint campaign planning and strategy. He also earned a Space Systems Certificate from the Naval Postgraduate School. As an information professional, he is qualified as an information warfare officer, surface warfare officer, and holds Certified Information Systems Security Professional certification.
Capt. Kinkead’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign decorations.
