A native of California, Capt. J. Steve Correia graduated cum laude from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U. S. Navy through the NROTC program in 1996. Capt. Correia applied for and was selected for transfer to the Information Professional (IP) Committee (1820) in 2002 after serving two successful tours as a Surface Warfare Officer.
Capt. Correia’s operational sea and war zone tours include Information Warfare Commander for Commander, Carrier Strike Group FIVE / CTF-70, Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications and Information Systems and Knowledge Manager for Commander, Carrier Strike Group EIGHT; Head of Frequency Management in Multi-National Force, Iraq (MNF-I) in Baghdad, Iraq; Fire Control Officer in USS Stethem (DDG-63); First Division Officer and Administrative Department Head in USS Juneau (LPD-10).
His operational and staff shore tours include Commanding Officer of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Far East; Commanding Officer of Naval Communications Security (COMSEC) Material System (NCMS); Commanding and Executive Officer of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS), Sicily; Branch Chief for Cybersecurity and Cyber Defenses on the Joint Staff J-6; Action Officer on the Commander, THIRD Fleet, Innovation and Experimentation (J9) Directorate; and technical instructor for Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific (FCTCPAC).
Capt. Correia holds a Master of Arts in Modeling, Virtual Environments and Simulation (MOVES) from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Science in National Security and Resource Strategy with a Certificate in Cybersecurity Leadership from National Defense University’s Eisenhower School, is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH).
Capt. Correia’s qualifications include Joint Qualified Officer (JQO), Information Warfare Qualified Officer (IWQO), Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), Strike Group Battle Watch Captain (BWC) and Fleet Tactical Action Officer (FTAO), Information Professional Advanced, and Master Training Specialist.
Capt. Correia’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Commendation Medal, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and two Naval Achievement Medals and various unit awards.
