Lt. Cmdr. Nathaniel Hayes enlisted in the Navy in 1997 as an Electronics Technician.  His enlisted tours were NAS North Island, USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) out of Yokosuka, Japan, and SRF-JRMC Yokosuka, where he was selected for a commission through the STA-21 program.  He reported to the University of Washington NROTC where he received a BA in Political Science and was commissioned in August 2008.

As an Ensign he was assigned to NIOC Texas where he completed his CWO and IWO qualifications while serving as the Maritime Counter Narcotics division officer and also deployed with USS NIMITZ (CVN68) as a Direct Support Officer, earning his OOD Underway letter.  In 2011, he transferred to NPS where he received an MS in Cyber Systems and Operations and completed JPME Phase I.  He returned to USS Nimitz in March 2013 as the SSES/EW Module division officer and deployed with the ship in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In July 2015 he reported to NAVIOCOM Colorado where he helped establish the Navy Unmanned Systems Team.  This was followed with a tour as the Space Operations Planner officer for CNE-CNA-C6F in Naples, Italy.  He is currently assigned as the Deputy Director of NIOC Hawaii N3J Department.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (x3), and various personal and unit awards.
