Capt. Bob Carmickle reports as Commanding Officer, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic in August 2021, after a successful tour at Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) staff as Senior Military Assistant to DoD Chief Information Officer (CIO), from November 2019 to July 2021.
 
Capt. Carmickle, a native of Anderson, Ky., graduated from the Columbus State University and enlisted in the Navy in 1999 as an Operations Specialist. In 2001 he received his commission from Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla. In July 2003, Capt. Carmickle was selected for lateral transfer to the Information Professional Community.
 
His sea assignments include Operations Specialist aboard USS Russell (DDG 59), Electronic Warfare Officer aboard USS John L. Hall (FFG 32), Main Propulsion Division Officer and Damage Control Officer aboard USS Cole (DDG 67), Liaison Naval Officer and Sea Combat Watch Officer with COMDESRON EIGHTEEN aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65), Strike Warfare Officer and Communications Officer with COMPHIBRON TWO aboard USS Saipan (LHA 2), Electronics Material Officer and Combat Systems Officer aboard USS Freedom (LCS 1), and Assistant Chief of Staff for C5I and Deputy Information Warfare Commander (IWC) Carrier Strike Group NINE aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). During these assignments at sea, Capt. Carmickle completed three gulf deployments, a Standing Naval Forces Atlantic Deployment, Exercise New Horizons 05 Haiti, a SOUTHCOM Deployment, and a EUCOM Global War on Terrorism Surge Deployment.
 
His assignments ashore include, instructor at the Center for Surface Combat Systems Dam Neck, VA, Junior IP Detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn., Officer in Charge (OIC) Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT) Detachment Hampton Roads, Deputy Executive Assistant to OPNAV N2N6 in Washington, DC and Commanding Officer of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, San Diego.
 
Capt. Carmickle also served with United States Forces Iraq as Civilian Ministries Branch Chief and Chief of Security Cooperation-Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn.
 
Capt. Carmickle holds a doctoral degree from Regent University, Master of Science degree from Syracuse University, a Chief Information Officer designation from National Defense University, is a Harvard Senior Executive Fellow, and is a graduate from Naval Postgraduate School with certificates in Space Systems Operations and Information Systems Technology. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
 
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal(six awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards)
