Cmdr. Andrew F. Young is a native of Kansas. He enlisted in the Marine Corps as a field radio operator assigned to 3
rd Battalion, 10
th Marines, 2
nd Marine Division from 1993 to 1997. He is a Cryptologic Warfare Officer and a 2002 graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He is also a 2006 graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School with a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Cmdr. Young's sea assignment was as the Information Warfare Officer, special security officer, combat information center officer, and operations security officer aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5), deploying in support of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for the earthquake in Haiti as well as a nine-month Mediterranean and Middle East deployment.
Ashore, he served as aide to the chief of intelligence, J2, as well as the ISR chief of the joint reconnaissance center at U.S. Africa Command. As a leader for one of the first Cyber Mission Teams, he served as the operations officer for Navy Cyber Unit 9 in Pensacola, Fla. He was the Fleet Information Warfare systems officer at Navy Cyber Forces Command, the type commander for information warfare. His first tour was as the Military Support Officer on the National Security Operations Center at the National Security Agency.
Cmdr. Young was assigned as the Deputy Information Warfare Commander of Carrier Strike Group 11 in October 2017. In March 2019, he was assigned as Operations Officer for Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group (NCWDG). Upon screening for Executive Officer, Cmdr. Young took over as Executive Officer of NCWDG in January 2021.
His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
