A native of Kentucky, Cmdr. Gilkey enlisted in the United States Navy in 1993.  From 1994 to 2001 he was assigned duty as a Hospital Corpsman with various commands.  Upon completion of a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University in 2004, he was commissioned via the Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP) as a Surface Warfare Officer (IP Option).  Following qualification as a Surface Warfare Officer he laterally transferred to the Information Professional community in 2005.
 
His sea assignments include Hospital Corpsman with the 1st Field Services Support Group (FSSG) and 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard the USS Donald Cook (DDG-75), Staff N6 with COMDESRON TWENTY EIGHT embarked on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), and Flag Communications Officer for COMCARSTRKGRU TWO and Commander Task Force-50 embarked on the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77).
 
During his assignments at sea, he completed three deployments, to include those supporting Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve.
 
His staff and shore assignments as an Information Professional Officer include U.S. Fleet Forces Command and Commander Second Fleet (C2F) N6 Staff, Cyber Security Inspection Certification Program (CSICP) team lead at Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), Officer In Charge of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMSLANT) Detachment Jacksonville, Fla., Joint Planner with Joint Planning Support Element (JPSE) and Operations Officer for Task Force 1010 / Naval Network Warfare Command.  He assumed command of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Hampton Roads in June of 2023.
 
Cmdr. Gilkey also served with United States Forces-Iraq as part of the J6 Forward Staff in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn.
 
He completed a master’s degree at Naval Postgraduate School in Information Systems Operations, and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).  He is a Joint Qualified Officer.
 
His awards include: Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and service medals.
