Information Systems Technician Master Chief (IDW/SW/AW) Melvin J. Johnson is a native of Louisiana.  After attending college at Southern University and A&M College, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 10, 2000.  After graduating boot camp, he reported to Advanced Electronics Technical Core, and ET “A” School, followed by TACAN “C” school where he was automatically advanced to Third Class Petty Officer.

His first duty assignment, May 2001 to July 2003, was on board the USS Kinkaid (DD 965) in San Diego, Calif., where he completed two arduous Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf deployments with his ship’s crew being part of the first ship “Sea Swap” with the ship’s crew of the USS Fletcher (DD 992). On board as a C4I technician and VBSS Security Team member, he provided technical support and conducted ship boarding’s in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

After completing his tour on the Kinkaid, he reported to the USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) in August 2003.  His technical experience on a vast number of radar and communication systems earned him the respect from his peers and Chain of Command as their leading Junior Technician.  In March 2004 he cross rated from Electronics Technician to Information Technician and attended and then graduated from IT “A” School.

His subsequent sea duty and overseas assignments include: Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Bahrain; NCTS Sigonella Sicily; Mobile Tactical Operations Center SIX Misawa Japan; USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74); and Commander 5th Fleet / United States Naval Forces Central Command Bahrain.
 
His shore duty assignments include tours at Commander 3rd Fleet in San Diego, Calif., and Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command in Suffolk, Va.
 
Throughout his career, he has held major job duties as Senior Enlisted Advisor, Department / Branch Leading Chief Petty Officer, Frequency Spectrum Manager, and Communications Security Account Manager.  He has been assigned to and completed deployments in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th Fleets areas of responsibilities, and participated in Operations, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Odyssey Dawn, and Inherent Resolve.
 
Presently, Master Chief Johnson is assigned to Naval Information Warfare Training Detachment Hawaii in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he serves as the Assistant Officer in Charge.

Master Chief Johnson is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 237), holds an Associate of Science in Information Technology, and is persuing classes towards a Bacahlors Degree in Business Administration.

Master Chief Johnson’s personal awards include: Enlisted Information Warfare; Enlisted Surface Warfare; Enlisted Aviation Warfare; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
