Born and raised in Iowa, Cmdr. Huls graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.  He holds a Master’s in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University, and a Space Systems Certificate from Naval Postgraduate School.  He earned his Submarine Warfare Officer badge in December 2008, and his Information Warfare Officer badge in September 2014.
 
His most recent assignment was as the Combat Systems Officer, Precommissioning Unit John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) from August 2022 to January 2024.                
 
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 2000 under the Delayed Entry Program and entered active duty service in January 2001.  After completing basic training in Great Lakes, Ill., and Enlisted Nuclear Power Training in Charleston, S.C. in February 2002, he reported to NPTU Ballston Spa, N.Y., earning his operator qualification and becoming a mechanical operator staff instructor.
 
Cmdr. Huls was commissioned under the Seaman to Admiral 21 (STA-21) commissioning program in May 2006.  His operational assignments include USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) (BLUE) as Electrical and Reactor Controls Assistants; USS Alaska (SSBN 732) (BLUE) as Damage Control Assistant, Assistant Engineer, and Ship’s Diving Officer; and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as the Communications Officer and Combat Systems Information Officer (CSIO), where he completed a seven-month combat deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and several non-combat operations.
 
His staff tours include Officer-in-Charge, Performance Monitoring Team, Kings Bay / Diego Garcia; Officer-in-Charge, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Far East Detachment Diego Garcia; and Commander, Combined Task Unit 1010.7.3, supporting Operation Freedom Sentinel; and various U.S. and British units, Warfare Analyst focusing on C4ISR in the maritime environment at Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence and as the C3 Readiness Team Lead at Naval Information Forces.
   
Cmdr Huls’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three), and various campaign, unit and service awards.  He is also authorized to wear the Strategic Deterrent Patrol pin (three patrols).
