Lt. Cmdr. Michelle "Shelly" Moeller is a 2010 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where she was a member of the women's soccer and lacrosse teams. She received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Oceanography.  Lt. Cmdr. Moeller served as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) until 2012 when she transferred to Naval Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC).
 
Lt. Cmdr. Moeller earned her SWO qualification on board the USS Chafee (DDG 90), Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and served as the Deck Division Officer.  Throughout her time on board, she participated in numerous multinational exercises and a 2011-2012 Western Pacific deployment.
 
Upon transferring to the METOC community, she reported to the Naval Oceanography Anti-Submarine Warfare Center (NOAC) Mississippi, where she held the position of Fleet Operations Officer from March 2013 until February 2015.  She dually held the position as Team Lead for Naval Oceanography ASW Team 201, assigned to Destroyer Squadron NINE and the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) where she attained her Information Warfare Officer qualification.
 
In April 2015, Lt. Cmdr. Moeller transferred to Headquarters Allied Maritime Command (HQ MARCOM), Northwood, U.K., where she served as the NATO Staff METOC, responsible for providing environmental forecasts and oceanographic assessments to all four Standing NATO Maritime Groups.  She was concurrently a member of the All-Armed Forces Women's Soccer team in both 2015 and 2016.
 
In April 2017, she transferred to Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG), Virginia Beach, Va., as the METOC Division Officer. While at NSWDG, her accomplishments include leading a team of METOC professionals in support of multiple combat-ready squadrons and a deployment as the Intelligence Deputy in support of a Joint Special Operations Task Force.  During this tour, she was also the recipient of the 2018 Capt. Richard C. Steere Award for Oceanography.
 
Lt. Cmdr. Moeller is a 2021 graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., where her Master’s research focused on a low-light field evaluation for nighttime underwater operations.  Following graduation, Lt. Cmdr. Moeller completed the Warfare Tactics Instructor course for METOC with a final project focus on non-traditional deployments of environmental sensors.
 
Upon completion of school, she reported to the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) for her O4 milestone as the ship’s METOC Division Officer and Principal Assistant to the Intelligence Department.  Throughout her time on board, she once again completed numerous multi-National exercises and a WESTPAC deployment.
 
Lt. Cmdr. Moeller’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two award), Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit awards.
