Chief Anthony Joseph Sylvia, native of California, enlisted as a Cryptologic Technician Collection in the United States Navy on November 10, 2011, and completed Cryptologic Technician Collection “A” School at Center for Information Warfare Training Command Corry Station in Pensacola, Fla., June 2012.
In June 2012, he reported to Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS William P. Lawrence (DDG-110), at homeport Naval Base San Diego, Calif. He served as a Special Signals Exploitation Space (SSES) Collection Operator until January 2013 and then cross-decked to the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG-111) and served as a SSES Supervisor. There, he led nine Sailors in the collection of high-value signals of interest and the production and release of time-sensitive reporting in support of Fleet and National tasking. During this tour, he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation and advanced from Seaman up to Petty Officer Second Class.
In January 2016, he transferred to NAVIOCOM Colorado in Aurora, Colo. There he served as a Senior Product Reporter and the only junior enlisted Deputy Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Mission Director (DSMD) for NSA Colorado. He led more than 100 joint-service personnel in the production and release of serialized time sensitive reports on adversarial targets in support of six Combatant Commands (COCOMs) and multiple national agencies and intelligence requirements. During this tour, he earned his Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist designation and promoted to Petty Officer First Class.
In November 2019, he transferred to NIOC Whidbey Island, Wash., where he served as the Aircrew Division Leading Petty Officer and a Special Operator aboard Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE (VQ-1) EP-3E aircraft. He completed numerous deployments to the CENTCOM, EUCOM, and INDOPACOM areas of responsibility. He was selected as NAVIOCOM Whidbey Island Senior Sailor of the Year (SSOY) for Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21) and 10
th Fleet SSOY Finalist FY21. During his tour, he earned his Naval Aircrew Warfare Specialist and Naval Aviation Warfare Specialist designations and promoted to Chief Petty Officer.
In October 2022, CTRC Sylvia completed the EP-3E Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course and reported in December 2022 to Naval Information Warfare Training Group (NIWTG) Detachment Whidbey Island. He subsequently moved the detachment and stood up Detachment Jacksonville, Fla., where he is currently serving as the detachment’s Senior Enlisted Leader and WTI in support of the MQ-4C Triton and P-8 Poseidon platforms.
CTRC Sylvia’s personal awards include Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (three awards), and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
