Capt. VerGow was born and raised in New York and was commissioned in 2001 through Officer Candidate School as a Cryptologic Warfare Officer.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the State University of New York at Geneseo, and a Masters in Global Security Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
 
His operational and leadership assignments include Special Evaluator on board VQ-1 reconnaissance aircraft at Naval Security Group Activity, Misawa, Japan; Department Head and Electronic Warfare Officer at Navy Information Operations Command, Colorado; Ship’s Information Warfare Officer on board USS Roosevelt (DDG-80); Executive Officer of Navy Information Operations Command, Bahrain; Flag Cryptologic Recourse Coordinator at Carrier Strike group TWELVE embarked on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71); and as Information Warfare Commander at Amphibious Squadron SIX embarked on USS Kearsarge (LHD-3).
 
His staff positions were as Plans and Policy Department Head and Battle Watch Captain at COMTENTHFLT; Branch Lead for Special Operations Contingency Plans at USCYBERCOM; Lead Planner for Countering ISIS Sustainment and Recruitment at Task Force ARES; Policy Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy; and Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.  He was the Information Warfare Branch Head at OPNAV N80 (Bullpen), responsible for the Navy’s entire $89 billion Information Warfare portfolio and the alignment of Navy investments with Presidential, Congressional, and SECDEF direction.  Most recently, Josh was the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare (N2N6). 
 
Josh held fellowships at the Atlantic Council as a Federal Executive Fellow, the Non-proliferation Policy Education Center as a Policy Fellow, and was the Navy’s lead for the Department of Defense’s Presidential Transition Task Force from 2020-2021.
 
Currently he is the Executive Officer, Deputy Program Manager, and Task Force Deputy Commander at Navy Cryptologic Warfare Development Group.
