A native of California, Senior Chief Giovanni M. Herrero enlisted into the Navy in August 2000.  He attended RTC Great Lakes and went on to CTR “A” school until 2001. 


Senior Chief Herrero’s afloat tours include the USS Princeton (CG-59), USS Sampson (DDG-102), and USS New Orleans (LPD-18).  His tour aboard USS Princeton commenced following the events of 9/11 during the Global War On Terrorism, in the Persian Gulf.  As a CCWS Supervisor, he completed two successful deployments in the 5th Fleet AOR in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, saw the launch of Tomahawk missiles, and was involved in fielding of new Cryptologic Carry-On Program capabilities.  While on board USS Sampson, he served as OT Division LCPO and completed two independent deployments, to the 7th and 5th Fleet AORs.  His time on board USS New Orleans included a homeport shift from San Diego, Calif., to Sasebo, Japan, numerous inspections, and four patrols during COVID-19. 

Ashore tours include Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Maryland as a Department of Campaign Desk Watch Officer on the National Security Operations Center Watch Floor where he served as a liaison between a wide variety of government agencies and NSA during major European Terrorist bombings; NIOC Menwith Hill as the Joint COMSEC Monitoring Activity Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge, Detachment Leading Petty Officer, and an Individual Augmentee deployment to Iraq as a Digital Network Intelligence analyst; at Tactical Training Group Pacific, preparing embarked staff members for certification prior to group sail and deployment; and NIOC Pensacola as a Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer and the 500 Cryptologic Support Team Leading Chief Petty Officer.  He is now assigned as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader of Naval Information Warfare Training Group Unit Detachment Japan. 

Senior Chief Herrero is a graduate of Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 281.  His personal awards include a Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), as well as multiple unit and service awards.
