Capt. Edward “Doc” McLellan is a native of Louisiana and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Russian Language. His undergraduate education was followed by a master’s degree in international relations from Tulane University and graduate history work at Moscow State University. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla., in December 2000. He holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Doctorate in International Relations from Tulane University.
Capt. McLellan’s operational tours include Tactical Watch Officer and Plans Officer at Commander, Undersea Surveillance, Imagery Officer at Carrier Air Wing THREE, Carrier Strike Group ONE Assistant N2, Battlespace Awareness Officer / Deputy Information Warfare Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWO, and most recently as Deputy MOC Director for Information Warfare, U.S. 3
rd Fleet. During his operational tours he supported Operations Vigilant Shield, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve, Freedom’s Sentinel, Final Countdown, and Joint Task Force Katrina.
Ashore assignments include the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Office of Naval Intelligence, OPNAV N3/N5, Navy Personnel Command, National Intelligence University Center for Strategic Intelligence Research, and the Joint Intelligence Operations Center, Europe, RAF Molesworth where he served as Chief of the Transnational Threats Division (IDX). He served as the Officer in Charge of the Chief of Naval Operations Intelligence Plot, delivering intelligence support to the CNO, Secretary of the Navy, and their respective staffs.
Capt. McLellan assumed duties as CSG-9 Information Warfare Commander in August 2024.
Capt. McLellan’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Rear Adm. Edwin Layton Award for Leadership, as well as numerous unit and campaign awards.
