Information Warfare Squadron Nine (IWRON-9)
The establishment of Information Warfare Squadrons (IWRONs) represents a fundamental shift in how the U.S. Navy organizes, commands, and fights in the information domain. As modern conflict increasingly hinges on decision advantage rather than platform advantage alone, the Navy has recognized the need to operationalize information warfare (IW) with the same rigor, unity of command, and accountability applied to air, surface, and undersea warfare. IWRONs are designed to meet this challenge by consolidating IW capabilities under a single, accountable commander afloat, enabling faster integration of effects, clearer command relationships, and more lethal outcomes across the full spectrum of conflict.
Information Warfare Squadron Nine (IWRON-9) operationalizes this new model for the Pacific Fleet. Purpose-built to deliver both offensive and defensive information warfighting capability, IWRON-9 plans, coordinates, and directs IW operations across assured command and control, battlespace awareness, and integrated fires. By unifying intelligence, cryptologic warfare, cyber, electromagnetic maneuver warfare, communications, and meteorology / oceanography under one command, IWRON-9 ensures that IW is no longer only a supporting function, but a fully integrated warfighting discipline that directly enhances Carrier Strike Group lethality, survivability, and freedom of action.
Against high-end, technologically advanced adversaries, IWRON-9 is designed to counter integrated sensor networks, long-range precision fires, cyber operations, and electronic attack by delivering synchronized, cross-domain IW effects at operational tempo. The squadron enables commanders to detect, understand, and disrupt adversary decision-making while protecting friendly networks and command-and-control systems. By consolidating IW expertise and authorities, IWRON-9 accelerates decision cycles and ensures information superiority in contested and degraded environments.
At the same time, IWRON-9 is built to adapt to emerging and low-cost threats that increasingly shape modern competition. From commercially enabled cyber activity and low-cost electronic warfare to unmanned systems and information manipulation, these challenges demand scalable, agile responses. IWRON-9’s integrated structure allows the Navy to apply proportionate, innovative solutions that deny adversaries asymmetric advantages while preserving operational flexibility across the competition continuum.
Lessons learned from training, experimentation, and deployment will inform future doctrine, readiness models, and force design, ensuring IW keeps pace with rapidly evolving threats. Through disciplined execution and continuous innovation, Information Warfare Squadron Nine is shaping how the Navy fights, wins, and prevails in the information age. IWRON-9 is under administrative control of Naval Information Forces and operational control of Carrier Strike Group NINE.
