Command Master Chief Derek A. Scheil, a native of Nebraska, entered the U.S. Navy July 1999 by attending Basic Training in Great Lakes, Ill. He attended Cryptologic Technician Technical and Electronic Warfare Technician “A” Schools at the Naval Technical Training Command in Pensacola, Fla. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland. Additionally, he is currently a doctoral candidate at Drexel University.
At sea, he served as EW division work center supervisor aboard USS Hue City (CG-66). During this tour he deployed to the 5
th and 6
th Fleet areas of responsibility (AOR). While assigned to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii for service in Surface Direct Support, he served as the cryptologic direct support element leading petty officer (LPO) aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68). During this tour he was selected for an Individual Augmentee assignment to Iraq as part of Special Operations Task Force – West conducting SIGINT Geospatial Analysis for Direct Actions. Scheil has also supported the Subsurface Direct Support mission of NIOC Hawaii, where he conducted 11 missions in the 7
th Fleet AOR.
Ashore, Scheil was assigned to National Security Agency / Central Security Service Hawaii for duty in HS2J Weapons and Space. During that tour he served as department LPO and senior non-commissioned officer of the PACOM J2 All-Source Watch, and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) liaison officer at the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Pacific. Additionally, he served at Tactical Training Group Atlantic as the collateral duty senior enlisted advisor (CDSEA) while concurrently being the information operations and intelligence DLCPO.
In February of 2017, he was selected for the Command Senior Enlisted Leader Program.
Scheil’s last assignment was Command Master Chief, USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) Blue Crew before currently serving as Command Master Chief of Information Warfare Training Group San Diego.
Scheil is authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal (five awards), Good Conduct (seven awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and several campaign and unit awards.
