The Communications Security Material Issuing Office (CMIO) is the Navy’s only communications security (COMSEC) equipment distribution facility. CMIO is staff by 16 government civilian personnel and one Naval Information Professional (IP) officer providing service to more than 400 COMSEC accounts. With the continuing change in COMSEC equipment and incorporation of new technology, the missions of CMIO will continue to change and evolve.
CMIO Norfolk supports the Department of the Navy’s (DoN) operations through the distribution of COMSEC equipment and keying material. CMIO performs the following functions:
- Deliver accurate, secure, and timely database maintenance of COMSEC keying material (KEYMAT) and cryptographic equipment distribution throughout the DoN, Marine Corps (MC), Coast Guard (CG), Military Sealift Command (MSC), and the National COMSEC community.
- Ensure the accuracy of the DoN’s COMSEC equipment holdings through its ten COMSEC accounts using the Common Tier 1 COMSEC system.
- Responsible for overseeing the shipping, receiving, and inventory of COMSEC equipment supporting the Department of the Navy and the National COMSEC community.
- Serve as COMSEC Keying Material Fleet Commanders’ representatives to identify, update, and manage appropriate instructions, notices, and messages used for the global distribution of COMSEC keying material.
- Perform changes and updates to support the mission and requirements of the warfighter.
